CARE OF YOUR TSAVORITE GEM STONE

Tsavorite is much more durable than Emerald and you will have far less reason to worry about damaging it. However, as with all gems, there are certain things that should be remembered. For example, do not clean it in a steam cleaner, of the type often used to clean Diamonds in jewelers shops. This could cause cracking. Unlike Tanzanite, Tsavorite can be cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner. The safest way remains as the time-honored cleaning with warm soapy water and a toothbrush.

The World's Premier Green Gemstone

This spectacular gem stone was discovered in East Africa in the late 1960's. It was named by Harry Platt of Tiffany & Co (New York) after the Tsavo game reserve in Kenya.

To this day, this exceptionally rare green garnet is found nowhere else in the world except in an area of barren, lion infested, raw wilderness that stretches from south-western Kenya into Tanzania. This region has a history of volcanic activity and due to the volatile geological conditions under which it forms, Tsavorite is only found in relatively small sizes. Stones over 2.5 carats are considered very rare and valuable. The Smithsonian Gem Collection’s prize piece is just 7 carats.

Tsavorite is presenting a serious challenge to the beleaguered Emerald as the world's premier green gemstone being considerably rarer, brighter, less included, a more pure green and totally untreated and unenhanced where Emerald is routinely oiled and glass filled. GEM PROPERTIES OF TSAVORITE GEM STONES

Tsavorite is a very rare green garnet that is found only in East Africa, nowhere else in the world. In the top qualities it ia stunning deep green color which has been called the envy of Emerald. Gemologically, Tsavorite is far superior to Emerald being rarer, brighter and more durable. Below is a comparisson of their gemological properties.

REFRACTIVE INDEX OF TSAVORITE : 1.74
REFRACTIVE INDEX OF EMERALD : 1.54

A gemstone's refractive index refers to how efficiently it bends light. Tsavorite's much higher RI translates into a brighter return of light to the eye than emerald is capable of.

DISPERSION OF TSAVORITE : 0.28
DISPERSION OF EMERALD : 0.14

Dispersion is the ability of a gem to break white light into its spectral colors. It is sometimes called "Fire" in the trade. Tsavorite had twice the fire of Emerald.

TOUGHNESS OF TSAVORITE : GOOD
TOUGHNESS OF EMERALD : POOR

The toughness scale refers to a stone's durability. Emerald is a very fragile gem whilst Tsavorite is comparatively much more robust.
