Geological History

Lake Baringo lies in the north of Kenya on the floor of the Great Rift Valley. The Rift Valley contains a number of lakes some of which house a large number of Flamingoes. Lake Bogoria is one of these. Between Lake Bogoria and Lake Baringo lies another spectacle of reds and pinks in the form of one of the world’s newest sources of Ruby and Pink Sapphire. This ruby is from this deposit. It began its formation somewhere between 600 million years and 500 million years ago. It formed due to a process called metamorphism. As magma pushed its way up through the existing rock the contact between the invading magma and the older rock caused a change to occur. The intense heat made the nearby minerals recrystallize into minerals stable at the higher temperature. This ruby was one of these. Millions of years later, there was a huge tectonic shift in the earth and a large section of land fell downwards to create what is now known as the Great Rift Valley. The ruby that had formed lay below this shifting plate. Today, it would lie at a depth of 2km below the earth’s surface. However, sometime between that time and this, pressure forced magma to explode towards the surface in flues and this ruby was one amongst many crystals which was forced upwards in this explosion. As the years passed weather erosion and flooding washed the ruby away from its host rock and carried it tumbling some distance. Over time this was covered in further deposits of soil and rock. It remained there until very recently when it was discovered by local prospectors and brought to Nairobi for sale. Here, it was bought by Lapigems Gem Company and cut by our master cutters. A journey of hundreds of millions of years has paused here.
